PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE

PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE became an autonomous vitivinicoltural concern in 1991 when Vittorio Fiore and his wife, Adriana Assjè di Marcorà, bought - on the Ruffoli hill, in the Municipality of Greve in Chianti (Florence) - some plots of land and a building from the division of an inheritance and disposal of various pieces of real estate including farm houses, vineyards, olive-groves, pastures and woods, which had been, more or less, abandoned for years, following the death of the previous owner.

Initially, this led to the establishment of a farm consisting of approximately 12 acres of vineyards, 8 acres of olive-growe, 8 acres of woodland and a rural building, which were added around 5 acres of olive-growe and a marvellous stone cellar for storing wine in barriques, which already belonged to the Fiore family.

In 1996, the opportunity came about to purchase a property of around 45 acres with extensive buildings and a working winery, adjacent to the main farm described above. This brought the total surface area of PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE to around 80 acres, divided up as follows:

vineyard - 40 acres

olive-growe - 15 acres

crops - 10 acres

woodland - 15 acres

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

Greve in Chianti takes its name from a small river ("la Greve", as it is affectionately known by the inhabitants of the area), which passes through the town. The sources of the river are on the hills which overlook the old medieval town, one of the most important historical centres of the Chianti Classico production area.

The slope of the Greve valley which faces westward is unanimously considered to be one of the most suitable locations for cultivating vines and olive-trees in order to gain the maximum expression of quality, thus obtaining the great wines of the Chianti Classico area and the marvellous extra virgin olive oil.

THE VINEYARDS

The vineyards and olive-growes of PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE are situated in an area which ranges from 350 to 450 metres above sea level. In fact, the farm takes its name from the appearance of the land which is characterized by the presence of wonderful drystone walls, built to support terraces of alla size on which vineyards and olive-growes alternate according to the features of the soil and which - from a distance - give the impression of a series of stairs climbing up the slopes of the hill.

On these terraces, as well as on a large plot of land called "IL CARBONAIONE" by local farmers, Sangiovese vines can be found which - it has been discovered - were the first to be planted in the decade following the end of the First World War (1915-1918), following the destruction of the majority of European vineyards by Philloxera towards the end of the 1800s.

Thus these are vines which have reached a venerable age of over seventy and which constitute, without a dubt, one of the very rare (if not unique) examples of the presence of the original clone of the famous "Sangiovese di Lamole" varietal in the Chianti Classico area.
